Condition (Pre-purchase) Valuation Survey

This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection and a sea trial. The surveyor will undertake an impartial critical inspection of the vessel's condition and arrive at a reasonable approximation as to its Fair Market Value.

Insurance & Valuation Surveys

An insurance survey is slightly shorter than a pre-purchase survey. It concentrates on the structure of the vessel, and has less emphasis on furnishings, sails and equipment. This is normally requested by the owner's insurance company. It usually is a requirement for the vessel to be inspected every 5 to 10 years, but the period varies with different insurance companies. Moreover, some insurance companies require specific kinds of surveys, e.g. rigging and engine oil analysis etc., as part of this type of survey. This should be checked with the owner's insurance company and brought to the attention of the Marine Surveying Company.

Damage Survey

A Damage Survey and Insurance Claim Survey is generally requested by an insurance company to determine the extent of damage to a vessel in an insurance claim, however, sometimes a vessel owner may find this survey useful to protect their own interest in dealing with a damage claim. The survey report will recommend repairs, estimate repair cost, and if requested, a possible cause. A detailed report will be included, along with photographs.

Sea Trials

This assessment is normally undertaken concurrent with the Condition (Pre-purchase) Valuation Survey. However, it may be taken separately. The purpose of the Sea Trials is for the surveyor to determine, whether or not the vessel can perform in accordance with expectations (contractually or otherwise) of the client. To do this the survey will need to know what is expected of the craft (the intended performance parameters).

Ultrasonic Gauging for Steel Hull Vessels

Mackay Marine Surveyors undertake ultrasonic inspections of steel and aluminium vessels (up to 15mm thick with no scrapping of the antifouling - provided the surface is smooth) and conduct surveys in accordance with the Code of Practice established by the International Institute of Marine Surveyors. Non -Destructible Testing (NDT), inspection to reveal cracks, discontinuities or weld failure, by using Penetrants Dyes and Solvents.
